Why is A Serious Man an Oscar nominee for Best Picture?
Can anybody enlighten me as to why A Serious Man is highly rated and an Oscar nominee for Picture of the Year? I thought it was totally boring and void of any value as a film. Just a waste of time. I'm a Coen brothers fan and enjoy many of their films like Fargo, Blood Simple and No Country for Old Men. This had to be their worst. I'm sure that if the Academy had stuck with 5 nominees instead of expanding to 10, this film would have never been nominated.

I agree with you, I too felt it was boring. I didn't know that Serious Man, A was a nominee. That's kind of surprising to know.

I found Serious Man, A to be a beautiful movie. The beauty of the movie was that it had no plot! There was nothing in the movie which would make me say whoa this can't happen in real life.

The movie was so common that it felt weird watching it and that made the day.

Well, Seinfeld had no plot and it was successful, so you may have a point. Except Seinfeld was funny and entertaining.

I watched it on DVD the night before the Academy Awards because it was nominated, and by the end really wished it hadn't been nominated so I could have done something more pleasant!

I didn't like it either. I didn't hate it, but I certainly got nothing from it.
I felt like the Coens didn't really know what they wanted to do with the movie, so they did next to nothing.
We just watch this modern-day 'Job', as his life falls apart. And then, it doesn't even end. It just...stops.
When the ending credits popped up, I thought, "seriously?"

Stupid people should not watch films. Stupid people should not nominate normal films for their stupid awards. Did I say the word 'stupid' enough?
